Betty Lou Jamison, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on January 14, 2024 in Surprise, Arizona. She was born on October 18, 1942 in Martin, Tennessee to Ollie and Sarajohn Pittman.
Betty grew up in Tucson, Arizona after her family moved from Tennessee when she was just a year old. She graduated from Rincon High School and went on to attend secretarial school. Betty excelled in her studies and became an executive secretary before she was unfortunately disabled due to back issues and surgery.
Although Betty faced physical challenges later in life, her spirit remained unwavering. She found profound joy and purpose in being a grandmother to her cherished grandson. He was truly the light of her life, and she affectionately referred to him as her "pearl." From the tender age of eight weeks old, Betty lovingly cared for him while his mother worked. As he grew older and started attending school, she made it a priority to ensure his safe transportation to and from school every day. For his mother, it was a blessing to have someone who loved her son as much as she did—someone who watched over him with unwavering devotion. Looking through Betty's photographs today revealed countless precious moments captured between her and her grandson—some that had never been seen before.
In addition to being a doting grandmother, Betty had a deep passion for Dachshunds. Throughout the years, she raised several of them as part of her furry family. It was an endearing tradition for Betty to name all of her Dachshunds "Fred," with the exception of the last one—a rescue named "Chewy." Dogs held a special place in Betty's heart; however, her bond with Sheldon—the family's Boxer—was extraordinary. Despite Sheldon's larger size compared to the wiener dogs she was accustomed to, he loved her unconditionally. During the last few years of Betty's life, as she battled with chronic back pain that confined her to bed, Sheldon remained her loyal and loving companion. He spent most of his days beside or underneath the bed, providing comforting presence while Betty tenderly stroked his fur.
Betty's final moments were peaceful and dignified, as she had wished. With the assistance of compassionate hospice nurses, CNA's, and social workers, she passed away in the comfort of her own home. The support she received ensured that she remained pain-free until the end.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents Ollie and Sarajohn Pittman and her husband Larry Jamison, who passed away in 2001. Additionally, one of her younger brothers, Richard Pittman, departed just over a year ago. She is survived by her younger brother Harold Pittman, who will be present at her services.
She leaves behind a loving family who will forever hold her memory dear. Betty is survived by her two children: daughter Sara Tradup (Jamison) born in 1964 and son John Jamison born in 1968. Her grandson Jacob Wisser, born in 1989 to Sara, brought immeasurable joy to Betty's life. She also had the privilege of having a caring son-in-law named Lyle Tradup and a daughter-in-law named Kendell Jamison, and her loving grandchildren Riley and Garrett.
Additionally, Betty leaves behind four nieces and seven nephews who adored their beloved Aunt Betty. Her extended family includes numerous grandnieces and grandnephews who will carry on her memory through generations.
Friends and loved ones are invited to attend the visitation service for Betty Lou Jamison on January 23, 2024, starting from 9:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Sun City West, located at 17419 N Conquistador Dr, Sun City West, AZ 85375. The funeral service will follow at 10:00 AM at the same location. Afterward, Betty will be laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix. The burial ceremony will take place at 12:30 PM.
