The Crosier Fathers and Brothers mourn the loss of our confrere. Br. John Edward “Gregory" Madigan, osc, was born Aug. 1, 1935, in St. Paul, Minn., to Edward and Rose (Kasal) Madigan. He was their only child.
Br. Greg died peacefully in hospice care at the Ellis Assisted Living Home in Phoenix, on June 4, 2024. He was 88.
He attended St. Stanislaus grade school, St. Francis and St. Agnes high schools and Nazareth Hall Seminary, all in St. Paul, Minn. He graduated from Crosier Seminary in Onamia, Minn., in 1954.
Br. Greg entered the Crosier novitiate in 1955 and made his first profession of vows March 19, 1956, in Hastings, Neb., renewed his vows in 1959 in Wawasee, Ind., and professed solemn vows in Onamia on March 19, 1962.
As a Crosier brother, Br. Greg served as a tailor for the Crosier Community of Hastings, Neb., 1955–58; in the kitchen at Wawasee Preparatory School, Wawasee, Ind., and as a tailor at Our Lady of the Lake Seminary, Syracuse, Ind., 1958–60; as a tailor and sacristan for the Crosier Community of White Plains, N.Y., from 1960–61; in the development office at Crosier Seminary, Onamia, 1961–88; as the coordinator of medical reimbursements for the province at the Crosier Community of Chicago, 1989–90; and as the sacristan on the Rose Hills campus of Fordham University in the Bronx, N.Y., 1990–2000. He was assigned to internal ministry at the Crosier Community of Shoreview, Minn., from 2000–03. From 2004 until his death, he was assigned to the Crosier Community of Phoenix. In 1988, he was removed from ministry with minors following a credible report of sexual abuse and was removed from all public ministry in 2002 and was living under a supervised safety plan until his death.
He is survived by his Crosier confreres in Phoenix and Onamia and around the world. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Br. Greg will take place at 11 a.m. on June 11 at the Priory Church of the Holy Cross at Crosier Village in Phoenix, with visitation at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Office of the Dead at 10:30 a.m. A luncheon will follow. A private inurnment is planned for the priory cemetery columbarium.
