Phoenix – Julia Margaret Purcell Burke (July 28, 1940 – January 1, 2019) was born into a loving Irish Catholic family in Reading, PA, to John and Katherine (Garrigan) Purcell.

Her family belonged to St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Reading. Julie graduated from Central Catholic in 1958.

Early in her career as an accountant, she worked in Valley Forge for the GE Space Science Laboratory, and later, after moving to Phoenix in 1971, for Motorola’s semi-conductor group. The capstone of her career at Motorola was traveling around the world training accounting groups in preparation for Y2K.

Julie was a life-long devout Catholic, participating as a member in a variety of religious communities

As a young woman in Philadelphia, she was engaged in apostolic work with the Legion of Mary. After moving to her beloved “big sky” Arizona, she was baptized in the Holy Spirit and became a member of the City of the Lord Catholic Charismatic Community in Tempe, where she treasured sharing everyday life with brothers and sisters in Christ. In later years, she joined the Women’s Sodality at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Phoenix.

She will be best remembered for her selfless love, especially for the beautiful way she raised her only daughter, Beth, and for her devotion to her husband of 20 years, Miles Burke, who will miss her greatly. She is survived by her husband, Miles, Miles’ children Jim (Sue) Burke (Phoenix, AZ), Maria Robert (Glendale, AZ) and Joe Burke (Phoenix, AZ); her daughter Beth Purcell Kabele (Portand, OR), her son-in-law Daniel Kabele and her 5 grandsons, Peter, Stephen, Luke, James, and Benjamin Kabele, whom she loved so dearly. She is also survived by her sisters Mary (J. Richard) Thren (Blandon, PA), Mollie Purcell (Gilbert, AZ), Katherine (Lawrence) Klick (Chandler, AZ), Nancy (Charlotte Fiorieto) Purcell (San Francisco, CA) and brother William Purcell (Sinking Spring, PA).

A visitation will be on Monday, January 14, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 pm with a Vigil service held at 7:00 p.m. at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix.  The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 4510 N. 24

Street, Phoenix. Interment will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery.  The family asks that in lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Maggie’s Place at www.maggiesplace.org
