Mary Lynch Calihan passed away on June 18, 2023. Her husband, Peter, was by her side holding her hand, where he has been for the last 65 years.
Mary was born August 2, 1947, in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Betty and John Lynch. In 1957, their family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and Mary entered the 5th grade at St. Francis Xavier School. At St. Francis, she met many lifelong friends including her future husband, Peter Calihan. Mary went on to attend Xavier College Preparatory where she played softball and was the Editor of the Xavier paper, Xpress. She then attended the University of Arizona where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and was a Wildcat cheerleader.
Shortly after graduating from the U of A, Mary and Peter were married on July 26, 1969. Mary and Peter went on to have three children that were the joy of their lives; Daniel Peter (Emily), Kevin Peter (Tara), and Kathryn Calihan Evarkiou (Adrian.) Mary taught elementary school before the birth of her first child and again after their youngest went to college. In 2002, the first of nine grandchildren was born and “Rosie” came to be. Rosie cherished nothing more than being a mother and a grandmother. Caroline, Peter, Blair (Danny & Emily), Ava, Mia, Hank (Kevin & Tara), and Lila, Callie, and Rory (Katie & Adrian) will be loved forever by their Rosie.
Mary spent many summer days in Pinetop, Arizona sharing her and Peter’s love of northern Arizona. She enjoyed nothing more than being with her countless number of friends and the friends of her children and grandchildren. Her love, endless hospitality, strong Catholic faith, and strength of character will live on in her family and friends.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Betty and John Lynch, and her siblings Patrick John Lynch and Margaret Elizabeth Lynch.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at St. Francis Xavier Church, 4715 North Central Avenue, Phoenix.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mary Calihan to Xavier College Preparatory, Brophy College Preparatory, or St. Francis Xavier Elementary School.
