Lauro “Larry” Garcia Castro

Lauro “Larry” Garcia Castro, beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather died peacefully at home on February 19, 2021. Larry was the second oldest of 5 children born to Leandro and Carmen Castro on August 18, 1927 in Sunnyslope where he was raised in a citrus farm where he often worked as a young man. In the barrio where he grew up, La Vivora, Larry was known as a protector and hero. He had strength of character and always meant what he said. He was always looking over his many siblings and cousins.

Larry was not only a hero amongst family and friends. He served in the United States Army as a Master Sergeant in the Korean war from 1947-1954 with the 2nd Infantry Division out of Fort Lewis, Washington. At one point, he led his platoon into battle in an enemy attack saving his comrades. As a result, he earned a Purple Heart for his wounds and a Silver Star for his heroism.

Larry went on to work at APS and ultimately Southwest Gas. In a career that spanned 43 years, he started as an operator, worked his way up to foreman, and through hard work and determination became general foreman overseeing his department. He enjoyed his career there and up until his last years continued to enjoy monthly meetings with his former colleagues.

Larry’ passions included watching any AZ sports – he loved football and cheering on the Cardinals and Sun Devils. He was an avid reader who was always up to date on current events and enjoyed watching the news. He loved old western movies and books. But his truest passion was family. He was his happiest at large family gatherings and his presence will be sorely missed.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Leandro and Carmen Castro and all of his siblings (Manuel, Domingo, Gilberto, and Tita). He was also preceded in death by the love of his life Juanita “Jenny” Castro with whom he was married 61 years at her passing in 2013. He was so proud of the family they created together.

He is survived by his children Carlos Castro (Peggy), Laura Castro (Stephan Adams), and Rosalia Mahoe (Robert), his grandchildren Kimberly Sowinski (Jared), Angela Bautista (BJ), and Kiliki Mahoe (Tammy), and his great grandchildren Aimee & Jayden Bautista, Cruz and Colton Mahoe, and Skyler Sowinski. He will lovingly be remembered from countless cousins and friends whose lives he touched.
