Robert “Bob” Meyer Cherner

Robert “Bob” Meyer Cherner, passed away on May 31, 2023 in Phoenix, AZ.

He was born on July 1, 1947 to Abraham and Helen (Terhune) Cherner in Chicago, IL. He grew up in Hays, Kansas, and after graduating from Hays High School, he attended University of Kansas where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Radiation Biophysics. Robert, Bob to his friends and family, became a life-long Jayhawk fan, fond of “waving the wheat” whenever he could, and met the love of his life, Linda Louise Westphal. He went on to earn his Master’s in Hospital Administration from the University of Iowa.

Bob and Linda were married on June 17, 1972 and moved to Phoenix in December 1975 for a position with the Arizona Hospital Association. He enjoyed a life-long career in Healthcare in many roles including Healthcare Administrator at Phoenix Children’s hospital and Healthcare Financial Consultant for several organizations. Ultimately, he and Linda fulfilled their dream of owning their own business, Silver & Cherner, Ltd., a healthcare association management company. They worked side-by-side building their successful business for over 20 years.

Bob was a great influence to many. He brought a calming presence and confidence to any room, always acting with integrity and bringing a smile to others’ faces with his quick wit.

He was a doting, caring, loving husband and throughout their lives together referred to Linda as his “beautiful bride”. They celebrated nearly 51 years of marriage. He was very proud of the life they built together, each having successful careers, and raising what he called two “amazing” daughters, Adria (Cherner) Harrison and Kara (Cherner) Largent. He loved being a father of two girls, always supportive of their activities and academic achievements. Bob would often spend long hours helping them with homework and shuffling them to/from everything including gymnastics, piano, and dance lessons. He was also well known for attending church youth camp with them during the summer and serving as a camp cook. When Linda’s new job meant she would leave home early in the morning, Bob’s dedication to his girls went so far as him learning to braid their hair, make them pancakes, and get them off to school. He found great joy in adding two sons-in-law to their family, and four grandchildren. He and Linda attended many school and sport activities for all four on a regular basis.

Bob loved the opportunity to serve others and volunteer. He and Linda were active members of the Corvette Club for many years, volunteered with the Fiesta Bowl and Lutheran Social Services, as well as ushered for Grady Gammage, Phoenix Symphony, and the Orpheum. He and Linda were always active in their church as well, with Bob serving on the church council and always a member of the choir. Bob and Linda embraced new adventures, which took them to many states in the U.S., as well as Australia, Greece, Peru, Egypt, Ireland, and other European countries.

Along with his wife Linda, he leaves behind two daughters and sons-in-law (whom they refer to as sons-in-love), as well as four grandchildren: Travis, Adria, Liam & Benjamin Harrison, and Chris, Kara, Alexa, and Ashton Largent. He is also survived by his sisters Maria Munroe and Barbara (Larry) Thompson, along with a niece and nephews and their families.

He is preceded in death by his parents – Abraham and Helen Cherner, parents-in-law Charlie and Emma Westphal.

A celebration of life is being held on Saturday, June 24 at 10:30am at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E Indian School Rd, Phoenix, who is compassionately serving the Cherner family. The service will also be live streamed at
