Juanita “Janie” Benavidez Guffey Cota

Juanita “Janie” Benavidez Cota, 93 years old, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2023, in Winslow, Arizona. She was born to Santiago and Maria Benavidez on November 22, 1929, in Cotula, Texas at El Rancho del Corazon. Janie was married to her beloved late husband William Guffey, who adored her, for 42 years. She was married to Rafael Cota, her 2nd husband, for 7 years.

Janie lived in San Antonio, Texas for 18 years. She moved to Phoenix when she was 18 years old to train employees at a new Dry-Cleaning Store. Janie stayed in Phoenix, AZ for 72 years. During this time, she managed several Dry-Cleaning stores.

Janie never had any children of her own, but she was loved by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and godchildren. The last 4 years of her life, she lived in Winslow, Arizona with Billie and Richard Avelar. Janie loved to be around her family, listening to Mexican music, and going to parties! She was a very social spirit and could talk to anyone!

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 19, 2023 at 9AM with rosary prayers to start at 10AM and the funeral service beginning at 10:30AM at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix. Burial to follow at East Resthaven Cemetery, 4310 E. Southern Avenue in Phoenix.
