On February 24, 2024, after blessing his community with loving-kindness for 89 years, our dad, Donald James Rideau, passed peacefully in his sleep at home. Son of Burleigh and Amelia, and brother to deceased siblings Sue, Burleigh Jr., Mikki, Bette, and Mary. Don’s home was Phoenix, but what made him grounded and whole everywhere he went were his hands.
His hands carrying a football, baseball bat, golf club or fishing rod, Don was ever an athlete and sports enthusiast.
His hands repairing a car or wiring electrical components, always whistling while he worked.
His hands first making a roux. Don’s gumbo nourished and brought folks together in celebration.
His hands building a home with a side door always welcoming long-distance family who knew it’d be unlocked.
His hands crafting pieces of furniture for birthday or wedding gifts.
His hands carving award-winning gourds, which he happily shared with others.
And his hands, holding those he encountered, even to his last days, with generosity, joy, and charm.
Don’s loving energy lives on through his brother - Charlie, his daughters - Tenia and Tiffany, his son - Michael, his step-daughter - Yvonne, his grandchildren - Samuel, Anthony, Isabella, Miles and his great-grandchildren - Alexzandra, Samuel V, Sophia, Savannah, Anthony II, and Ruby.
