Doreen Mae Bailey

DOREEN MAE BAILEY – passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 in Tempe, AZ. Doreen was born on March 16, 1933 in Renton, WA to Lena and Pete Balzarini. Her life’s purpose began when she met her soulmate, Vance, while working at a library in Seattle. They shared countless adventures together, their greatest raising their daughter Dayna. They also owned a Tavern and Bowling Alley in Ephrata, WA and Doreen personally owned Doreen’s Colors and Coiffures, affectionately known as “the Hair House.” She was both owner and stylist. Then in 1980 they moved to Tempe, AZ where Doreen went to work in the County Assessor’s office, rising in the ranks until her retirement in 1996. Suddenly she was busier than ever doing things for those she loved; in her words, “keeping everyone else on their toes.” It was a fun time with genealogy/golf road trips and when home there were always Oreos in the jar and bacon ready in the bottom fridge drawer. She was the office manager, painter, mechanic, caddy, genealogical assistant, cook and more! In 2007 her world was crushed by the loss of Vance days before Christmas.

She carried on by sharing her home and heart with fur babies. First, Lhasa Apso, Hobbes and then
working with the Poodle Rescue, many fosters and adoptees including the infamous tripod, Benny. She also was inseparable from best friend/daughter Dayna who lived across the street. Tragically Dayna’s vibrant light went out early after a 2-year battle with cancer during which Doreen was her caregiver.

Doreen had Alzheimer’s for several years, it progressively took her memories, but it never took her wit or style. She remained full of love and fun and will be missed by all. She is survived by her grandson, Colin Rasor (Donna), and brothers Pete (Raeanne) and Ernest (Joan).

Memorial service will be held on Friday, December 8, 2023 at 10 A.M. at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home.

Doreen’s burial will be January in Renton, WA at the Greenwood Memorial Park.
