Dr. Rudolph Alton Reid, Jr. was born on June 6, 1948, in Nashville, Tennessee. He is the son of Dr. Rudolph Alton Reid and Elaine Woodford Reid, both deceased. He passed away following a long illness on November 25, 2023.
Rudy attended public schools in Washington DC. He attended Mckinley Technical High School and enlisted in the US Navy following graduation. His naval career included a tour in Viet-Nam as a Corpsman (E-6) with the 1st Marine Division. Following discharge from the Navy, Rudy earned a B.S. degree in Zoology from Howard University. In 1972 he joined the Army H.P.S.P. Program and in 1978 he graduated from Howard University College of Medicine. CPT (Dr) Rudolph Reid interned at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Trained as a Flight Surgeon, his tours of duty included Fort Bragg, N.C., Schweinfurt, Germany as Director of Health Services, and Phoenix, Az. Following discharge from the army, Dr. Reid briefly worked for the Federal Correctional Institution in Sandstone, Minnesota. He was also employed by public health to provide services to indigenous populations in the southwest US.
His greatest accomplishment was that he was a loving and devoted father. His daughter Gloria Reid was his sole caregiver during his long illnesses until shortly before his death.
Dr. Reid is survived by his daughter Gloria Reid, his son Sean Reid, his sister Laura Reid Shell, his step-daughter Christina Mullett, his granddaughter Alexa Mullett-Gonzalez, and his friend and former wife Dr. Yvette Clinton-Reid. He will be missed by family, friends, and the patients he cared for.
A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 12 from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85018. A Graveside service will follow at 1:30 PM at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road.
