At the age of 85, Edward George Hernandez passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, October 4, 2024, in his home of 58 years. Ed was born May 4, 1939, in Morenci, AZ, to his late parents, Lupe Diaz and George Hernandez. He is survived by his sister Carmen and brother Steve and was preceded in death by his brother Bob.
Ed grew up between San Diego, visiting his mother, and Morenci, living with his father and uncles Diego and Gilbert. He graduated high school in Morenci and went to Arizona State University to major in Electronics, where he met his wife, Ernestine, in his Junior year in 1959. Upon graduation, Ed enlisted in the Army, where he was stationed out of El Paso and worked on missile guidance systems for three years. Ed and Ernie were married in 1963 and moved into their Phoenix home in 1966, where they remained throughout their marriage.
Ed worked at Honeywell in 1965 while his wife taught at Cartwright Elementary. They had four children from 1969 through 1979; Stephen, Eddie Jr., David, and Marisa.
In 1992, Ed received his MBA and was hired to run the computer department at Boswell and Del Webb Hospitals. He authored two books on Excel and MS-DOS software. He was also an Ad Hoc professor at Glendale Community College for several years until his stroke in April 1994.
Ed was a devout Catholic, dedicating his life to prayer, service, and worship. He loved being involved in the Cursillo movement, sang 40 years in the choir at St. Louis the King, was the cantor at Mass, and was heavily involved in various church committees and events. When he wasn’t working or helping the church, Ed loved camping, cycling, running, and coaching little league baseball and soccer. He is remembered by so many for his unconditional love. He was considered as a “second father” to many of his nieces and nephews. Ed and Ernie have always had a revolving door in their home where they have welcomed many family members to stay with them in any time of need. This has always been a source of pride and joy for Ed throughout his life.
Ed’s loves were his eight grandchildren: Solana, Amira, Brysen, Asher, Rania, Miles, Isa, and Safia, watching his favorite movies & TV shows, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and ASU football. He bled maroon & gold and thoroughly enjoyed watching ASU crush the Wildcats!
In his final years, Ed always kept endearing photos of his beloved mother, brothers, uncles, and grandchildren next to him at all times. He felt his loving family close to him through their cherished photographs. Ed will be dearly missed by us all, but we are all grateful he is now dancing in heaven with his beautiful family and his new body.
