Erickson “Eric” Johnstone (92) died April 9, 2024, in Phoenix, AZ. He was born May 24, 1931, in Manhattan, New York to Muriel Thorne Erickson and George Colgan Johnstone. Eric was married to Lyndal Ruth Refsnes-Johnstone for thirty-seven years.
Eric was a longtime resident of New York City. He also enjoyed his farm in Milbrook, New York, as well as his second home in Phoenix, AZ.
Eric attended Lawrenceville School (1949) in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. He graduated from Yale in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1954. Eric proudly served as a captain in the US Marine Corps. Reserve Forces from 1955 to 1965.
Eric truly loved animals. He was a longtime Horseman and polo player, belonging to the Millbrook Polo Association. He rode with the Millbrook Hunt for many years, and said, “I hunted fox, but would never kill a fox.” Eric was never without a pet dog. He served on the boards of the Westminster Kennel Club and the ASPCA, both in New York. Eric was a member of the Millbrook Golf & Tennis Club and the Mashomack Club, also in Millbrook. In New York he was a member of the Farmers Club, The Leash Club, The Brook Club and the Union Club.
Eric was also a very fine downhill skier, skiing across the U.S. and European mountains.
Eric had a long career in the investment business industry with firms Loeb Rhodes & Co., Morgan Stanley & Co., E.F. Hutton & Co., Brean Murray, Foster Securities, and Blackford Securities Corp. Eric retired and moved to Phoenix, AZ, in 2009.
When he moved to Phoenix, Eric enjoyed serving with the Encanto-Palmcroft Historic Preservation Association.
After marrying his wife, Eric acquired many in-laws and became one of the most popular family members. His brother-in-law, Joseph L. Refsnes Jr. remembers Eric as an avid reader who was sharp with mind-blowing recall. For his younger family members, Eric was a supportive figure and a role model. His niece, Lyndal Anne Pleasant, remembers Eric as having the best example of a very beautiful marriage. Niece, Kari Latin says “Eric was amazing, kind, and funny.” Niece, Carmen Refsnes recalls Eric as “witty, very interesting, and timeless.” Eric was very loved and will be missed by many.
Eric is survived by his wife Lyndal, “Lynde” Refsnes-Johnstone, his cousin, Susan Williams and her son, Edward.
Private services have been held with the family.
