Eugene “Mike” Mikkelson passed away on April 16, 2025 at the age of 93 surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Maggie Romley Mikkelson with whom he shared a life of love, happiness and fulfillment. The proud father of Brian (Deceased), Cathy (Jerry Ehmann), Wendy McDaniel (Dave, Deceased), and Craig, whom he loved dearly. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Rhoads, TJ (Tyra), Joshua, Brennan (Deceased) (Krysta), Tanner, Kirsten, Romley and Samantha. His five great grandchildren: Emery, Jax, Troy, Audrey and Ila brought him an abundance of joy and laughter. Son of Selmer and Esther Mikkelson and brother of Shirley Hamre (Dean). He grew up in Blue Earth, Minnesota and came west in 1951. Despite leaving Minnesota, Minnesota never left him. As an Air Force Veteran, he was proud to have served his country. In 1953 love brought him back to Phoenix where he later married Maggie at Brophy Chapel. He graduated from Arizona State University in two and a half years. As an ASU fan he was always cheering on his Sun Devils in football, baseball, and basketball.
Mike started his own CPA firm in 1960 and practiced for 61 years creating lifelong friendships with many of his clients which spanned three generations. He was honored to serve as a past President of the Arizona Society of CPA’s (ASCPA). The Knights of Malta allowed him to live his Catholic faith in serving others. Many organizations such as Xavier College Preparatory, Brophy College Preparatory, St. Vincent de Paul, St Mary’s Food Bank, and others benefited from his generosity.
In his 50's he found his real passion was running. Through the years he logged over 60 miles a week and completed 44 marathons including the Boston. He ran an astounding 3 hours and 55 minutes from the North Rim to the South Rim at the Grand Canyon. The running community became his extended family filling him with friendship and the thrill of competition. On his 80th birthday he challenged himself to play 80 minutes of tennis and was successful. He cherished the friendships and memories created throughout his lifetime.
Mike was known for his "smile" and kindness to all. He made you feel like you were the center of attention.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 19, at 10 A.M., at Brophy Chapel, 4701 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix. Reception to follow at Anderson Hall.
