Stephen Eugene Flynn IV, M.D., age 85, passed on 1/19/18 at The Gardens of Scottsdale. Place of residence was his beautiful Mexican style home in Paradise Valley. Born on 8/21/1932 in Seattle, Washington. Spouse of 54 years to Mrs. Barbara Ann Flynn. Eldest child of Lieutenant Stephen Eugene Flynn III, M.D. and Estelle Flynn, brother to Felicia Scheib, Patrick Flynn, M.D. (preceded in death), Vincent Flynn, M.D., Michael Flynn, Kathleen Potter. Dr. Flynn arrived in Phoenix in 1962 as a new MD and had a wonderful surgical career of 33 years in Phoenix. Dr. Flynn attended college at the University of South Dakota from 1951 through 1956. He graduated from medical school at the University of Texas in 1958 and returned to San Diego to finish his internship at the San Diego County Hospital. His four years of surgical residency was at Maricopa County Hospital in Phoenix. In 1968, Dr. Flynn began working with the Franciscan Fathers in Guaymas, Mexico where he performed surgery and practiced general medicine in the Guaymas, Sonora area concentrating on the underserved locals. He brought patients back to Phoenix for medical care that was not available in Guaymas. Dr Flynn made over 500 trips to Mexico to aid indigent patients while continuing to serve his patients at the Phoenix office. Dr. Stephen Flynn received the Tom Dooley Humanitarian Award from the Maricopa Medical Society in 1988. He served as President of the Phoenix Surgical Society in 1990. Received the Sertoma Club Humanitarian Award in 1995 and was the recipient of the American Ireland Fund Humanitarian Award in 1996. Preceded in death by his parents, Stephen Eugene Flynn III, M.D. and Estelle Flynn, his brother Patrick Flynn, M.D. Survived by his wife Barbara Ann Flynn, his three children; Stephen Eugene Flynn V, Sean Flynn and Estelle Doris. Daughter in law Mercedes Flynn, son in law Jerome Doris and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Saint Mary’s Basilica 231 N. 3rd St, Phx, on January 27, 2018 at 9:30 A.M.
