Gertrude Theresa Valonis

June 17, 1940 — March 26, 2025

Phoenix

Gertrude Theresa Valonis Age 84 passed peacefully on March 26, 2025. She is survived by three of her four sons: Louis (Oregon), James, and Paul (Arizona). Her son Angelo deceased (1990), and her husband George also deceased (1992)

Born on June 17, 1940, on a farm in Coaticook, Quebec, Canada, Gertrude was the daughter of Victor Boisvert and Esther Belanger. Gertrude was the fourth child out of 14 siblings, including Richard (deceased 2015), Leo (deceased 2013), Pauline, Robert (deceased 2019), Rita, Edmond (deceased 2007), Agnes (deceased 2016), Gerard, Suzanne (deceased 1972), Joseph (deceased 2014), Michel, Maurice, and Carole.

Throughout her life, Gertrude held various occupations such as farmhand, seamstress, nanny, and business owner of a house and office cleaning company. Above all, she was a devoted sister, wife, beloved mother of four sons, aunt, and grandmother to Alayah and Mia Valonis, daughters of Louis Valonis and Megan Buser, residing in Oregon.

Gertrude met her husband George Louis Valonis in Venice, California, in 1971. They quickly fell in love and moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where they married in 1975 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. George worked as a truck driver and delivery person for Hensley Beverage Company for 18 years. Together, they raised four sons: Louis, James (Dimitri), Paul, and Angelo. Sadly, Gertrude lost her son Angelo in 1990 due to a tragic accident and her husband George in 1992 after a battle with cancer. These losses brought their family closer together, with Gertrude becoming the matriarch, raising her remaining three sons with strict yet loving guidance.

During this time, Gertrude operated her cleaning business and provided for her sons. Louis later moved to Oregon, where he met his wife, Megan Buser. Gertrude proudly attended Louis's wedding, expressing her joy and pride.

Gertrude and her sons were dedicated to their church, starting custodial duties in 1989. James and Paul joined her in 1995, continuing their work for over 30 years to improve the foundation and service of the church. In 2021, Gertrude's health began to decline after contracting COVID-19 and being hospitalized for 10 days. Despite her recovery, she chose to retire at the age of 82. Her sons James and Paul provided exceptional care for her during her final years.

Gertrude will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her love and guidance greatly impacted her sons' success, setting an example for her sons to follow.
