Gillie Chavez passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Litchfield Park, Arizona, on September 30, 2024, at the age of 80. He was surrounded by his loving wife, Luisa Ruth, and his daughter, Miranda, as well as the love of his family and caregiver during his final moments.
Born on November 4, 1943, in New Mexico, Gillie was the son of Horacio and Cecilia, who both preceded him in death, along with his beloved sister, Gloria.
A proud veteran, Gillie served in the Vietnam War, where he earned the Purple Heart for his bravery and dedication to his country. He cherished his time as a Marine and carried that pride throughout his life.
Gillie lived in San Diego, California, but fell in love with Arizona, eventually making the Phoenix area his home in 1993 with his family. He had a passion for watching classic Western films - “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” being his favorite. He also enjoyed cheering for his favorite football and basketball teams, especially the Phoenix Suns, and loved to listen, dance, and sing along to his favorite music, showcasing his wonderful singing voice. He loved gathering with his family, especially during the holidays and other celebrations when everyone could be together. No one had a greater love for sweets than Gillie, and he always looked forward to the pineapple desserts baked by his wife, which never failed to bring a smile to his face.
Gillie is survived by his beloved wife, Luisa Ruth, who was the light of his life for 35 years until his passing, as well as by his children: Miranda, Tamera, Lynn, Matthew, Renee, Carmela, and Julia. He also leaves behind his siblings, Leo and Mary Jane. He loved being an uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather, feeling truly blessed by the many grandchildren and great-grandchildren in his life.
Gillie will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, and his legacy will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends. While he will be dearly missed, we find comfort in knowing he is now dancing in heaven.
As we celebrate Gillie’s life, we invite everyone to enjoy a coffee and a delicious pastry in his honor. In that moment, remember that he is smiling down from above. Thank you for keeping his memory alive.
A heartfelt thank you to his caregivers, Beverly and Maria, and to his dedicated care team at the VA and Hospice of the Valley for the exceptional care they provided to Gillie over the past several years. We also extend our deepest gratitude to all the extended family members who not only offered their loving companionship to him but also contributed to his care.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday, November 1, at 12:30 PM, at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, located at 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85024. This will be followed by a celebration of Gillie’s life for close family and friends.
Rest in peace, Dad. As you reunite with your beautiful parents and sister, may you sing and laugh together again. We love you, and you will forever be in our hearts and memories. Until we meet again.
In memory of Gillie Chavez, please consider making a donation to Hospice of the Valley.
