85, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away September 25, 2015. She was born June 27, 1930 to Chester Hernes and Helen Smolenski in Grand Rapids, MI. She is survived by her cousin Arlene Lillis, God daughter Kathleen Puerto, Mary Lou Nash, Rev. Father John Wisneski and many cousins and friends. Barbara graduated high school in Grand Rapids, MI. She worked at Michigan Bell for 7 ½ years before moving to Phoenix in 1956. She attended the Phoenix College of Business and retired from American Express in 1996 after 21 ½ years working in credit finance and in credit cards. After Barbara retired, she worked part-time at Wells Fargo preparing statements. She did a lot of volunteer work, tutoring in the Scottsdale School District and was very active at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. She belonged to Our Lady of the Assumption Fidelity and the Ministry for the Home Bound. She was involved at St. Agnes Catholic Church and started the pennies for computer drive. She knitted chemo caps for the American Cancer Society. Barbara was interested in the education of children. Through NPH USA she supported a boy in Mexico and a girl in Haiti and also liked to support St. Joseph’s Indian School, Chamberlain, SD. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, the Senior Center at 28

Street and the American Express Retirees Club.
Visitation will be held at 9:30 AM, Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM and reception at 11:30 AM, Monday, October 5, 2015, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 2312 E. Campbell Avenue, Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, 400 E. Monroe Street, Phoenix, AZ 85004.
