Jack Mowrer Stumpf, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on August 29, 2024. Jack was born to Howard and Margaret Stumpf on May 28, 1928 in Lancaster, PA. Jack grew up during the height of the great depression and learned some valuable lessons about hard work along the way. After graduating high school, he joined the US Army at the tail end of World War II. After completion of his service, he graduated from Franklin and Marshall College with a degree in Geology, which he never used. Jack worked his way through college, paying for tuition by working at a liquor store and excelling as a stellar poker player at his fraternity house. Upon graduation, he went to work for National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) in Philadelphia and Chicago as a plant foreman. Making Ritz Crackers, Oreo’s, and other treats of the day, took a toll on his asthma, which led to a recommended move to Phoenix in 1960. Jack initially found work in a new field at Phoenix Title. Then, a friend encouraged him to take an aptitude test to become a computer programmer with General Electric. This led to a 26-year career at GE and Honeywell as a systems analyst, developing computer programs for newly built electric and nuclear power plants across the country.
Jack married Anne J. Stumpf on July 31, 1954, celebrating their 70th anniversary last month. Together, they built a loving life together while raising two sons, Kurt and Karl. Jack enjoyed 35 years of retirement travelling the world with Anne. Jack enjoyed spending time reading (especially the newspaper), walking and hiking, dabbling in finances and spending time with family and friends.
Jack is survived by his wife Anne, sons Kurt (spouse, Susan Valocchi) and Karl (partner, Joanna Peters) as well as grandchildren, Stephen, Alexander, and Sydney. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, older brother Howard Jr. and grandson, Parker Stumpf.
A small family gathering will be held to celebrate Jack’s life per his wishes. We are proud of you Dad and will miss you and your guidance. Rest in peace and have comfort that your spirit lives on within us.
