In loving memory of Karin R. Powell, a caring wife, nurturing mother, and cherished friend. Karin passed away on December 5, 2023 at the age of 86 with her devoted son Christopher at her side. She is survived by her sons Christopher and David (Jean). She is predeceased by husband Derek, brother Peter Gesche and sisters Renate, Evelyn and Lydia and parents.
Born on March 12, 1937 in Berlin, Germany, Karin was a beacon of love and compassion throughout her life. She dedicated herself to her family and friends, embodying the true spirit of selflessness and unwavering strength.
After arriving in the US, Karin put herself through course work in Russian language at the University of Pittsburgh. She skillfully utilized her multi-lingual abilities to found her own company, Technical Translation Services, which serviced the iron and steel and chemical manufacturing industries in Pittsburgh.
Her impact extended beyond the walls of her home, as she generously shared her love with the community of young opera singers and symphonic musicians by opening her home to those who were far away from their own over the holidays. Karin selflessly demonstrated her unwavering support of members of the LGBTQ+ community as an ally and confidant enriching the lives of many while inevitably leading to any number of "adopted" sons from all over the country.
She was a guiding light for her children, extended family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Her legacy is one of love, kindness, and resilience. Karin will be fondly remembered for her warm smile, gentle touch, brutal honesty, delightful sense of humor, pure elegance, great taste, love of Opera and classical music, and the countless moments of joy and laughter she brought to those around her.
Her passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of her family and friends, but her legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire and guide them and those she touched.
May she rest in eternal peace.
For many years, Karin and her husband Derek created a close circle of friends as subscribers to Pittsburgh Opera performances. After recently moving to the American Southwest, a place that she had adored since childhood dreams, Karin began attending the magnificent concerts of The Phoenix Symphony where she was welcomed so warmly. In lieu of flowers, donations to Pittsburgh Opera and The Phoenix Symphony in her memory would be greatly appreciated.
A celebration of Karin's life will be held both in Phoenix and Pittsburgh in the coming weeks and months where friends and family will come together to honor and cherish the beautiful life she lived.
