Fernando “Ferd” R. Kirchner, MD, 86, passed away January 4, 2017, in Tucson, AZ. He was born in Mexico City, Mexico, December 19, 1930, where he graduated with honors from medical school at La Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. Ferd then trained at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Kansas City, KS, completing his residency in general surgery and otorhinolaryngology. Ferd met and married the love of his life, Charlotte Strah Kirchner, in 1962. They made their home at Lake Quivira, Ks. He was a professor at the KU Medical School for 20 years before going into private practice in Kansas City, KS. Ferd received numerous awards for his research and development of improved surgical equipment and techniques. He enjoyed his retirement years in Tucson, AZ, where he was an avid golfer at Skyline and La Paloma Country Clubs, making double digit hole-in-ones. Ferd also spent time fishing and volunteering with the Pima County Public Library. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Ferd and Charlotte were married for 54 years. He is survived by two daughters, Dr. Laura (Tom) O’Malley, Phoenix, AZ; Melissa (Randy) Bright, Destin, FL; five grandchildren, Erin and Tara O’Malley and Georgia, Halle and Kirch Bright; and sister, Bertha Romero Kirchner Aguilar, Mexico City, Mexico.
