Kurt Richard Murphy, aged 71, passed away on July 4, 2024, in Glendale, AZ. Born on November 26, 1952, in Chicago, IL, Kurt dedicated his life to the field of library science, significantly contributing to the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign, University of Oregon - Eugene, and Arizona State University Libraries over his nearly 30-year tenure.
Kurt is survived by his mother, Eleanor "Ellie" Murphy (nee Creed) of Phoenix; sisters, Sara and Courtney, both of Tempe; and close friends Yvonne "Yvie" Murphy and Mario Vavra. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nicole Fiala "Nikki" Murphy, as well as his fathers, Heinz "Rick" Mauerer and Robert Hugh "Bob" Murphy.
He held a bachelor's degree and an MLS from the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign and an MBA from Arizona State University.
An avid guitar player, Kurt found joy in music, often sharing this passion with friends and family. He had a quick, irreverent sense of humor and could always see the funny side of situations. His career as a Librarian was marked by dedication and innovation, influencing many in his field.
Contributions in memory of Kurt can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Compassion & Choices. The Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home in Phoenix, AZ, is assisting with the arrangements. Kurt's legacy of love, knowledge, and compassion will be remembered by all who knew him.
