Nancy Laliberte

Nancy Laliberte, 92, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2020.

Nancy was born Nunzia Capuano on January 1, 1928, in New York City at the stroke of midnight – the first baby of 1928. She was born to Pasquale Capuano and Maria Cuiffreda Capuano. Nancy was the fifth of thirteen children, Joseph, Michelena, Raffaella, Antoinette, Dominick, Anna, Constanza, Pasquale Jr., Carmine, Marie, Sandra, and Frank.

The Capuano family moved to Springfield, Massachusetts in 1941.

Nancy met her future husband Leo Jules Laliberte when she was working at the credit counter at Carlisle’s Department store in Springfield. Leo had just returned from the war and was looking for a small loan to purchase fishing equipment. Nancy was happy to help by gathering Leo’s information (including where Leo went to church). That Sunday, Nancy “accidentally” ran into Leo at mass. The two fell in love. Leo made his way West, and on January 15, 1953, Nancy moved to Phoenix, Arizona and she and Leo were married the following day at St. Mark’s Church on January 16, 1953.

After many years of trying, Nancy and Leo finally welcomed Lauria Anne into the world followed by Mark Leo and finally Steven Jules.

In addition to working at Carlisle’s Department Store, Nancy, as a young woman, held positions at Sky Harbor Airport and the Arizona Biltmore. Later, Nancy worked the graveyard shift (to be able to spend her waking hours with her family) at Motorola Semiconductors, retiring in the late 80’s.

Nancy is survived by her beloved brothers Dominick, Carmine, and Frank, as well as her devoted sister Sandra. She is also survived by her children, Lauria, Mark and husband Brian, Steven and husband Brian; her grandchildren Teresa and husband Nick, Sherrie and husband Anthony, Kathy and husband Peter, Patrick and wife Mai, and Mercy; and her great grandchildren, Avery and Leo – – with Emma and Ava on the way. Additionally, there are many nieces and nephews and cousins that Nancy loved and who also loved her.

Services for Nancy will be held on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, located at 1954 N. 24th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85008. Visitation will commence at 9:30 a.m. followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment will directly follow at St. Francis Cemetery, 2033 N. 48th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85008.  For all those unable to attend in person you may view the live stream of the Mass at:

COVID-19 considerations – The family is grateful for all those who can attend the services for Nancy, but is understanding of those who cannot in these unprecedented times. St. Agnes is a large church built to house greater than 1000 parishioners. Pews have been sectioned off to account for physical distancing. Additionally, the services at the graveside will be open-air and limited to 15 minutes. Due to the pandemic, there will be no reception to follow the services and the graveside observance will be the conclusion of the proceedings.
