Lilia D. Lopez, 94, passed away on November 10, 2022 at A Place in the Sun in Scottsdale. Lil called this her home for the past 5 yrs. due to the loving care that Ilie and Adriana Iugan and their staff provided. Lilia was a native Phoenician born on May 30, 1928. Lilly resided with her sister, Marguerite for most of her life. She is survived by her sisters Marguerite Trujillo, Norma Roberts and Victoria Quinones. Generations of her nieces and nephews called her “Aunt Lil” and had a very close ties with her due to her good physical health and always present youthful spirit. Lilia’s athletic skills kept her connected with family, friends and the Arizona sports community. Her love of sports began when she was a member of the Phoenix Union High School Golf team.
She was inducted to the Hispanic Hall of Fame for sports as she pitched for the Arizona Ramblers and Chicago Bloomer Girls. Lilia also played Tennis for the WACs during her 2nd tour of duty. Her 1st tour of duty was serving in Japan and Korean. Upon returning from her 2 tours of duty she attended and graduated from Phoenix College. Lilia is preceded in death by parents Frank F. and Jessie D. Lopez, her brother Gilbert Lopez who died in infancy, sisters Bertha Rivera and Dora James and her nephews Peter, Carlos and Richard Saldano. She is survived by a multitude of her beloved nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at 11:00AM at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix. Interment will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery.
