Mary Vicente Lopez became a star in the sky on March 6, 2012 when she passed away surrounded by her family. Mary was always a star to her family, friends, and poker playing buddies. She was born in Jerome, Arizona on August 18, 1918. She loved to dance, cook and sew beautiful clothing. Mary moved to Los Angeles and married Art Lopez. They raised four children, Carolina, Art, Vincent, and Robert. The family moved to Phoenix, Arizona in the mid 1940’s where Mary enjoyed being near two of her siblings, Margaret Lopez and Tony Vicente. Her brother, Ignacio Lopez, remained in L.A. Mary was lively, gracious full of energy and loved a good time. She enjoyed her 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. She was encouraging to all with good humor and good cooking. She went to Hawaii when she was 80 years old with her tap dancing group to entertain at a Seniors Conference. Recently she won a huge poker jackpot at a local casino. She was active up to the last month of her long life when she presented her life story with historical family photos to over 200 people at The Beatitudes Senior Residence for the Arizona Centennial Celebration. She outlived all her siblings. Sadly, she lost her youngest son in 1991 and was preceded in death by her husband Art Lopez in 1992. Funeral Service will be at 10:00am, Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix. Interment will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery.
