Mary Concetta Scuderi, beloved wife of Gaetano “Tommy” Scuderi, passed away March 30th at the age of 94. She was born Mary Maiuri on December 7th 1930 in Detroit, one of 5 children. She married Tommy Scuderi in Detroit in 1951 and moved to Phoenix in 1959 with 3 of her 4 children in tow, the 4th being born in Phoenix. While Mary’s passion was for her family, she was also active in the family business, as president of Scuderi Tile Contractors.
Anyone who knew Mary, knew the kitchen was where she was most at home. Scratch made pasta and biscotti were a staple in her house, and her homemade ravioli and cannoli, a Christmas day staple, were always raved about.
On Saturdays, as far back as anyone can remember, you would find Mary and Tom at the American Italian Club with friends, doing her 2nd favorite thing which was dancing. Tom and Mary were excellent dancers, and through their early 90's continued dancing at weddings and occasional trips to the Italian Club. When the dancing slowed down, they also entertained friends at their house with weekly games of cards or Rumicube.
Family was at the heart of Mary’s life. As the family grew, so did their traditions, with monthly gatherings to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. Christmas was always a particularly special time, with Mary ensuring that all of her grandchildren felt the warmth of her generosity, making the day joyful for everyone. Her kindness extended beyond family, as friends’ children also enjoyed the benefits of her giving spirit. Mary’s ability to bring happiness to others was truly a gift, and she was unfailingly generous with her children and grandchildren, always going above and beyond to make them feel loved and cherished.
Mary was an active member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, and since 1986 St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in North Phoenix.
She is survived by her husband Tommy Scuderi, daughter Nina Sutton and her husband Tom, Son Anthony Scuderi and his wife Paris, daughter Annette Roberts and her husband Dave, and preceded in death by daughter JoAnn Heath. In addition to her children, she is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, along with two sisters in Detroit, Dolly Mainardi and Ida LaPosta.
