Bill “Herk” Mcdermott

Bill passed peacefully the morning of February 16, 2016 in the presence of his family. Bill was born in Winslow, AZ January 6, 1927 the son of William H. McDermott and Francis Hurta. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Sgt. Joe Dee Hurta and granddaughter Abigail Rose McDermott. Bill is survived by his wife, Evalyn, daughter Jill, son Gary, grandchildren: Medea, Lucas, Talia, great-granddaughter Lilah and great-grandson Julian; along with his sister and brother-in-law Dr. Franklin and Jerry Lee Zecca, nieces and nephews. Bill grew up in Miami, AZ, creating friendships that continued for a lifetime. He became a beloved teacher and coach throughout Arizona. He was a former Phoenix Coaches Association Man of the Year and was inducted into the Arizona Coaches Hall of Fame. Herk will always be remembered for his many friendships, loyalty, sincerity, kindness and, above all, the most spectacular handwriting. Always loved, always in our hearts. Friends may call at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home on Sunday, February 21, 2016 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM with a Scripture Service at 5:00 PM at 4800 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 PM, Monday, February 22, 2016 at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 5045 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix. Interment will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery.
