Myron P. Mykyta, born March 10, 1954 in Lorain, Ohio, to Dmytro and Olga (Petrushynska) Mykyta. After the family moved to Phoenix, Myron played basketball at North High and graduated in 1972. He attended Oberlin College where he studied political science, played basketball, and served as sports editor and later editor-in-chief of the Oberlin Review. While at Oberlin, Myron met his future wife Alicia, with whom he returned to Phoenix. Myron earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Arizona State University and then in 1980, a master’s degree from the University of Chicago. Myron, his brother Julian, and Alicia formed a polka-waltz dance band, Yaseny, that performed at many Ukrainian celebrations. While working in opinion research and raising a family, Myron studied at Kino Institute and was ordained a deacon in the Ukrainian Catholic Church. He loved the Byzantine liturgy. He furthered his studies at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and in Ukraine, and in 1997 Myron was ordained a priest in the city of Drohobych, Ukraine. He returned to the States where he served as pastor of Ukrainian churches, first in San Diego and then for ten years in Los Angeles. Myron is survived by his wife Alicia, son Myron (Lori), daughter Teresa, and granddaughter Ama, as well as his sister Maria Groll (Joseph) and brother Julian (Mary).
