Anna Geraldine “Gerry” Roberts Nelson, 89 of Phoenix, AZ, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2023. Born on May 29, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, her family moved to Phoenix in 1939 when she was 5 years old. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nick and Evelyn Roberts, brother Bill Roberts and sister Betty Salas. She is survived and leaves behind her loving husband of 59 years, Leonard Nelson, son Keith (Alison) of Winchester, MA, grandchildren Jasmine & Luke, sister Nancy Roberts Elzey (Jerry) of Phoenix, stepson Brian Nelson (Debbie) of Dallas, TX, sister-in-law Doris Nelson of Rockaway Beach, OR, in addition to many nieces, nephews, step grand and great grandchildren. In 1957, she graduated from Mt. Saint Mary’s University in Los Angeles, CA, and later finished her formal education with a master’s degree from Arizona State University in Tempe.
“Gerry” as she wanted to be called, was an educator for some 50 years, and a great portion of her career was teaching in the South Phoenix elementary school system of Roosevelt District. She loved to read and that transformed to a talent where she was best known for her skills in providing young children with the art of learning to read. That love of teaching continued long after her retirement when she volunteered her teaching skills to HonorHealth John C. Lincoln “The Learning Center” helping children with their reading and English skills. She was very much appreciated for her sarcastic sense of humor and wit. Most credit that for being a 2 time, and 40-year successful cancer survivor. Gerry had a deep, strong, and lifelong Christian faith and was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Parish and served Our Lady of the Assumption Sodality.
A Visitation, Rosary, and Funeral Mass will all be held on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 2312 E. Campbell Ave., in Phoenix, AZ. Visitation will take place from 10:00 – 11:00 A.M., Rosary at 10:40 A.M., and Funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, 2033 N. 48th St., in Phoenix, AZ. It is highly recommended that all family and friends park in the church lot on Campbell Ave., not the one on 24th St. due to school traffic. The family wants to thank Stillwater Hospice for their caring support for Gerry and her family. Donations in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association would be greatly appreciated, www.alz.org
