O’Bryan, Seamus Raphael
32, was taken from us on January 31, 2014 in a hit and run accident in San Diego. He attended Osborn Middle School, Brophy College Preparatory and the University of Arizona (Theater Education).
A vibrant member of the theater community there, he worked on the production staff for the La Jolla Playhouse for nearly a decade and, at the time of his death, was Stage and Properties Master of the White Theatre at the Old Globe Theater. Described as a true friend and Renaissance man by colleagues and friends, he also was a selfless humanitarian. He volunteered as Director of Medical Infrastructure with Medinet Vanuatu/Project MARC (Medical Assistance to Remote Communities), working with the Ministry of Health building women’s clinics, standardizing birthing practices for local tribes and building water delivery and treatment facilities to improve quality of life.
All this he discovered while pursuing his dream of learning to sail a tall ship, the Alvei, which transported medical supplies and personnel around the island nation of Vanuatu in the South Pacific. He subsequently worked with Habitat for Humanity and in 2010, joined in earthquake relief work in Haiti.
An avid archer, kite-flyer, and creative artist, he especially enjoyed taking friends and visiting cast members for sails in the waters of San Diego. Characterized as having an “insatiable appetite for helping people”, Seamus Raphael continues to give to others by having been an organ and tissue donor. He truly was a “Man for Others”.
Preceded in death by beloved grandfathers, Dr. Eugene Acosta Marin and Louis O’Bryan, Sr. and, one year ago by his older brother Gabriel. Seamus (‘Ralph’ and Raphael to his family in Phoenix) is survived by parents Bert and Marty, brothers Michael and Devin, loving grandmothers Marie Corrales Marin and Frances Higdon O’Bryan, and a wealth of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
