Phoenix

Dr. Patricia M. Hopkins, Assistant Professor Emeritus of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures at Texas Tech University, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 84, following a long illness.

Born on March 21, 1940, at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, Pat’s life was defined by hard work, determination, intellect, and adventure. She graduated from Seton Catholic High School, Baltimore, in 1958 with the highest honors in their academic curriculum. She continued her education at Saint Joseph’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where she graduated in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in French. She was described as "subtle, satirical and scintillating” and was a “consistent Dean’s Lister.” One summer, she worked at the Esskay meat factory in Baltimore, quickly realizing that her future lay elsewhere. She went on to earn her Ph.D. at the University of Missouri, where she was recognized for her intellect. Her time at Mizzou established the foundation for a distinguished career in academia and her lifelong friendships.

For 39 years, Patricia taught French at Texas Tech University, inspiring generations of students with her expertise in classical and modern languages. With her sharp wit, humor, and wisdom, she had a unique ability to engage even the most reluctant students and win over colleagues. She was a lifelong member of Pi Delta Phi, the French honor society. Even after retiring in 2007, she remained involved in academia, dedicating her time to editing papers for fellow professors, reading voraciously, and engaging in lively discussions about current events and culture. In 2007, she moved from Lubbock to Phoenix.

A devoted Catholic, Pat’s faith guided her throughout her life, leading her on a pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago late in life. She had a deep appreciation for the arts and never missed an opportunity to attend the theater or a concert. An avid traveler, she explored the world—from Europe to South America and from Alaska to the Middle East—always seeking new experiences and broadening her understanding of different cultures.

Though she never married, Pat surrounded herself with a close-knit circle of friends in Texas and Arizona who became her chosen family. She held a special place in the hearts of many, including numerous honorary “nieces” and “nephews” who affectionately called her "Aunt Pat" or "Peeps." She delighted in their company, showering them with candy, thoughtfully curated Christmas boxes, and endless laughter—often erupting into giggles herself.

Pat was predeceased by her beloved parents, James V. Hopkins and Carmelita McAllister Hopkins. She was also predeceased by her three cherished dogs, her loyal companions. She regrettably leaves behind her final loyal companion, Zoni.

In accordance with her wishes, her funeral will be held privately, and she will be laid to rest at St. Francis Cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the Arizona Humane Society, www.azhumane.org.
