Roger Lynn Maxwell, 79, died on May 28, 2024, peacefully with his daughter and son-in-law at his side.
He was born on June 20, 1944 in Covina, California to Shields and Isabelle Maxwell. At the age of 5, his family relocated to Oklahoma City. It is there where he was introduced to the game of golf, and it changed his life forever. He attended Oklahoma State University on a golf scholarship and after graduation he headed west.
After working at a few different courses, he landed at Camelback Golf Course in Scottsdale, Arizona. His love and passion for the game would take him all over the world as he was promoted to Director of Golf Operations for Marriott International in Washington, D.C. Six years later he would return to Arizona to pursue his love of retail and opened ‘In Celebration of Golf’ in 1995. The Celebration became the destination for all things golf and truly showcased Roger’s love for the game.
He accomplished all of these things alongside the love of his life, his wife Kathy. They were a true match, and enjoyed working together, travelling, and raising their daughter Jennifer. They were married in November 1974 and were together for 38 years before she passed away in December 2012 after a battle with cancer.
Roger was a friend and mentor to many in the golf and retail industries. He never thought of his various jobs as work, but rather as an opportunity to further the game of golf and help inspire others. His passion for the game and generous spirit will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come and he will forever be celebrated.
Roger is survived by his daughter Jennifer (Jeff) Crane; his grandchildren Addison, Julia and Ryan; his sister Susie Maxwell Berning; and his many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Kathy, brothers Jerry and Bill, sister Blanche, parents Shields and Isabelle and his ‘FORE Players’ foursome Don Baldwin, Lou Grubb and Jim Buckley.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 6th at Paradise Valley Country Club at 1pm. Condolences may be expressed at www.whitneymurphyfuneralhome.com.
Please cherish the swings you made with Roger and play a round of golf in his honor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley or Barrow Neurological Institute, two places who were instrumental in his care over the last 4 years.
