John George Sgouros
John George Sgouros fell asleep in the Lord on April 30, 2020 in Scottsdale, Arizona at the age of 81. He was born in Athens, Greece in 1939, served in the Greek Army as a Military Police Officer and later as a Merchant Marine for five years traveling around the world three times by way of the sea. He immigrated to the United States in 1965 and joined in marriage to Ifigenia “Jean” Arvanetes in Chicago, IL. John worked his entire life in the construction industry from walking the beams during the construction of the John Hancock building in Chicago to performing carpentry trim work on multiple popular places such as the Bellagio and Mirage Hotel where his craft can be viewed in each and every lobby.
He enjoyed being surrounded by his family, especially his grandchildren attending their various activities, being at home getting his daily dose of Greek Hour, his wife’s company and cooking, playing Texas Hold’em for his social activity but most notably took great pride in his heritage and culture. He lived and was always there for his family and open to helping in any way that he could taking on multiple jobs so that his family would never have a need, he truly knew the meaning of hard work. He helped his wife start multiple Greek Orthodox Churches building various items out of wood.
He is survived by his son George Sgouros (Traci), his three grandchildren, Jonathan, Zoe and Gianna, of Scottsdale, Arizona; his sister Panayiota Konstantakopoulou (Panayioti), and two nieces Georgia and Evangelia (Panos) and their two children Christos and Lazaros, of Athens, Greece. He was preceded in death by his wife Ifigenia “Jean” Sgouros; his Father, George and Mother, Georgia.
All services will be conducted at the Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home – 4800 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix, AZ.
The Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 from 9:00-11:00 AM and will be open to the public with limited persons at one time along with social distancing regulations.
The Funeral Service is at 11 AM and is for immediate family only.
Interment will be at Paradise Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in his memory to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 8202 East Cactus Road Scottsdale, AZ 85260. Arrangements entrusted to Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home.
