It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Teresa Hortensia Luévano Covarrubias on July 3, 2024. Born on October 15, 1943, Teresa was a cherished member of our community, a beloved figure in the field of education, and a loving mother.

Teresa’s passion for education began at St. Mary's High School, and this passion eventually led her to earn a PhD in Education from Arizona State University. Her career, spanning over four decades, was dedicated to shaping young minds and fostering educational excellence. Teresa served with distinction in the Phoenix Elementary School District #1, holding various roles including 4th grade teacher, Director of Bilingual Education, the host of the children's show “Niños Contentos” and ultimately retiring as the principal of Garfield Elementary School. Her dedication and innovative approach left a lasting impact on the students and staff she worked with.

Teresa was married to David Covarrubias, with whom she shared a life full of love and mutual support. Together, they built a family and a legacy of kindness and commitment to education.

Teresa is survived by her loving family: her brother, Ted Luévano (and his wife Ann); her children, Michael (and his partner Becky), Melissa, Mark, and Matthew (and his wife Odile); her nephew Adan (and his partner Patricia), and her adoring grandchildren, Maxence, Luc, and Cash. Her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
