Thomas R. Akers, a resident of Scottsdale passed away on September 29, 2024. Roland was born in Tarrant City, Alabama in 1928. He married his wife of 72 years Amy Ludell Akers in Birmingham, AL and served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He worked in the family’s grocery store and a local bakery while learning to be a refrigeration service technician working for over forty years in the Birmingham area. Roland earned an instrument rating logging many hours as a pilot flying around the south.
He retired in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area where he worked as a payroll courier and a VA Medical Center Volunteer. He was a member of Pike Avenue Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was a member of First Southern Baptist Church of Scottsdale. He loved nature and photography and traveled the west visiting many national parks with family. He was a participant in the Arizona Honor Flight (2018) where he and other Korean War Veterans traveled to Washington, DC.
Roland is survived by three sons, two grandsons and a great-grandson. No services are planned at this time.
