Martin Portillo Ulloa

Martin Portillo Ulloa was born in Phoenix, AZ on March 5, 1931 and passed away peacefully at home on September 24, 2015 at the age of 84. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and close friend to many in the Phoenix community. Martin lived a remarkable life. He was a proud alumnus of Phoenix College and Arizona State University earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Education. He was a dedicated high school educator and inspired many youth to excel in their education in the Phoenix Union High School District (PUHSD) in his roles as an Athletic Director, Principal, Administrator and DECA Director at Phoenix Union, South Mountain, Maryvale, North, and Central High Schools. Martin was an avid golfer and a longstanding member of the Par Gents Golf Club. Martin believed deeply in educational equity, social justice, and volunteering in his communities. He was an active member of the Vesta Club, the Coaches and Athletic Directors Group, El Grupo, the Tempe Chapter of the Arc for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, St. Mark’s Parish, St. Gregory’s Parish, the Lions Club, the Center for the Blind, and volunteered with many other organizations in the community. His volunteerism extended to remote villages in Belize to build homes with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and Habitat for Humanity. He proudly served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was a Legionnaire for almost 60 years.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Maria Concepcion Ulloa, his dear sister, Enedina Ulloa Cerino, and his best friends and brothers, Robert Ulloa and Jesse Ulloa.

Martin is survived by his wife and partner of 59 ½ years, Dora Nadine Estrada Ulloa, and their children Martin (Siobhan), Roberta, Ana and Mark (Nora). He enjoyed being a “Tata” and adored his six grandchildren, Nina, Marcos, Miranda, David, Rachael (Jasper) and Emma (Michael) and his two great- grandchildren, Rosetta and Isaac. Martin will be greatly missed by his closest in-laws, Roseanna Estrada, Ray and Cecilia Estrada, Albert Cerino, and Nellie Ulloa and his many dear cousins, nephews and nieces.

Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, October 2, 2015 at St. Gregory Catholic Church, 3424 N. 18
