90, of Mesa, AZ, passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2012. He was born on February 4, 1922 in Mississippi and later moved to Missouri, where he left to join the U.S. Army. He drove a tank across Europe in the 743rd Tank Battalion during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon and six battle stars. Sam was a hard-working man who drove trucks for most of his career, and loved sharing his truck-driving stories. He was an avid gardener and fisherman. He is survived by his wife, Minnie, of 65+ years, daughter, Kay Franklin (Brian), son, Sam (Mike), 7 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 5 from 6 – 8 P.M., with Funeral Service on Thursday, September 6 at 10 A.M., at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix. Interment will follow at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
