James Allan Wellman

This world lost a fine man on November 14, 2017 when James Allan Wellman passed away in Phoenix, AZ, finally freed from the bonds of early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Diagnosed at age 50, the disease sapped his vitality and memory over the past 12 years. All who knew him will forever cherish the real Allan–a loving husband and father, talented artist, meticulous home renovator, steady provider and a great cook. His quick wit and warm welcome would light up your day. He was an avid Beatles fan, a proud liberal Democrat and was always ready to help others. Allan was born in San Mateo, CA on September 2, 1955, to Lewis and Julia (Chinn) Wellman and lived most of his life in San Mateo County. He had a degree in Fine Arts, but kept his day job to avoid becoming a starving artist. He was a consummate sales representative for packaging companies in the farm and grower industry in the greater Bay Area and established deep and abiding relationships with his customers. In 1997, he married the love of his life, Barbara E. Hughes and they welcomed their daughter Kayla P. Wellman, whom Allan considered the most beautiful child in the world. Nothing made him happier than to be spending time with his family and he will stay in our hearts forever. Allan is survived by his wife and daughter; brothers-in-law, Joe, Tim, Terry, Brian and Richard; sisters-in-law, Phyllis, Sharon, Carol, Diane, Carolyn and Natasha; his best friend from Alaska, Greg King; three brothers, one sister and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, December 9th at 10:30 A.M. at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix. The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Brookdale-North Glendale, Hospice of the Valley and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, Allan asked that donations be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 2300 Adeline Drive, Burlingame, CA 94010, or to the Save the Redwoods League, 111 Sutter St., San Francisco, CA 94104.
