Age 79, died peacefully on Monday, September 28, 2015, in Phoenix, Arizona. His wife and all his children were with him. Dick was born in Shullsburg, Wisconsin in 1935 to Gerald and Catherine Whalen. He moved to Arizona in 1946. Dick attended St. Mary’s Elementary School where he met Carol Benenato, the love of his life. They married in 1956 and were devoted to each other for 59 years, raising five wonderful children. Dick was proud to serve his country in the United States Air Force. After his four years of service were completed, he continued to serve in the reserves. Dick began his career at General Electric as an assembly wireman in 1958, eventually retiring from Honeywell Bull after 32 years as the Director of Materials Management. He also served on the Board of Directors at the Deer Valley Federal Credit Union. Dick was a world class Grandpa to his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, attending school events, sports activities, and graduations for as long as his health allowed. Dick also enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Pinewood, preferably with his grandchildren visiting, playing horseshoes, and eating his homemade strawberry ice cream. Dick also loved Arizona sports teams, cheering faithfully for the Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Sun Devils.
Dick will be greatly missed by his wife Carol, children Richard (Nancy), Erin (Russ), Kim (Ken), Michael (Devon) and Gary. Also grandchildren Danny, Andy, Connor, Alicia, Kyle, Ryan, Zach, Emma, and great-grandchildren Jazmynn and Benjamin. He is survived by his brother Tom and four sisters: Jane, Sally, Kay, and Susie.
