Winn McDermott Black, age 97, September 10, 1927- February 26, 2025. Born in New Hampshire and a longtime resident of Colorado, Winn spent the last three decades retired in Phoenix Arizona as a resident of Arcadia and North Central. She was fiercely independent and always self-sufficient. Winn made her life on her own terms despite the headwinds of the times for women of her generation.
Winn was an avid reader of the humanities, loved opera deeply and endlessly advocated for design and architecture. She did develop, however, a surprising affection for football and Western movies over the past few decades. To the end of her life she was a master of crossword puzzles, loved chocolate and felt her birthday celebrations were never grand enough.
She filled her home with butterflies, made only one great thing: blueberry muffins and, most importantly, continued to surprise us with her powerful mind and thoughtful insights to the last moments of her life.
Winn leaves behind children: Linda Vonbank, Dean Black and Jack Black as well as grandchildren: Amy Travis, Aaron Vonbank and Angela Johnson. Her lifelong friends include Betty Moore, Anna Preston and Junie Hoggatt.
We express our deepest thanks to many loving friends and especially to Dominick Abatemarco, Tom Martin, Sandy Werthman and Scott Burdick who entertained, made amazing meals and supported Mom in her last years.
A private celebration will be held in the future.
